/KNS뉴스통신] 중국의 티베트 지배에 항의하는 18세의 한 여승이 분신자살을 시도했으나 생명에는 이상이 없는 것으로 12일 티베트의 민권단체가 밝혔다.
자유 티베트 방송은 11일 쓰촨성 아바현의 비구니 사찰의 텐진 초이진이라고 알려진 이 여승이 자신의 몸에 불을 질렀다고 발표했다. 이 방송은 지난해 10월에도 20세의 한 여승이 분신자살을 보도한 바 있다.
지난해 10여 명의 남녀 승려와 일반 티베트 사람들이 분신자살을 시도해 그 가운데 11명이 사망했다고 알려지고 있는데 민권운동가들은 이들의 자기 희생은 중국의 정책에 항의하고 달라이 라마의 귀한을 촉구 하기위한 것이라고 말하고 있다.
2008 티베트의 수도 라사의 폭동으로 사망자가 나오고 주변 지역으로 번지자 중국 당국은 군 병력을 대거 증강하고 일 년 동안 외국인의 티베트 출입을 봉쇄한 사건이 발생한 이래 가장 극심한 시위가 최근 몇 개월 사이에 이 지역에서 폭발하고 있다.
중국 당국은 지난 멏 주 동안 쓰촨성 지역을 방문하기 위해 신청한 서방 기자들이 요청을 거부하고 있다.

Tibetan nun sets herself on fire in western China
BEIJING (AP) — An 18-year-old Tibetan nun has set herself on fire in western China in the latest such protest against Beijing's handling of its vast Tibetan regions, an overseas rights group said Sunday.
Free Tibet said in a statement that the nun set herself ablaze Saturday and was believed to have survived. The young woman, identified as Tenzin Choezin, was a nun at the Mamae Nunnery in Sichuan province's Aba prefecture, the statement said.
Government and police officials reached by telephone in Aba said they knew nothing about the case and hung up.
In October, a 20-year-old nun from the same monastery set herself on fire and died, according to Free Tibet.
More than a dozen monks, nuns and ordinary Tibetans have set themselves on fire over the past year, and Free Tibet says at least 11 died from their injuries. Rights groups say the self-immolations are a protest against China's policies and a call for the return of the Dalai Lama. The Tibetans' spiritual leader fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.
The last few months have been the region's most violent period since 2008, when deadly rioting in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, spread to Tibetan areas in ad joining provinces. China responded by flooding the area with troops and closing Tibetan regions entirely to foreigners for about a year.
Western reporters trying to visit that part of Sichuan in the last several weeks have been turned away by security forces.
